What Makes a Heat Pump Water Heater Different?
Natural gas water heaters are the most common type of water heaters in residential and commercial use in our market. Homes and buildings without natural gas or propane available typically use an electric water heater that heats the water in the tank with electric resistance heating elements.
This is a highly inefficient and costly way to heat water. A heat pump water heater is an electrically powered alternative that uses refrigerant to remove heat from the air outside the unit and then release the heat into the water tank. So what it does is transfers heat rather than creates it. This requires far less electrical power (about one-third of the power) to move heat than to generate it directly.

The heat pump water heater is also an option for buildings that have natural gas or propane water heaters. Gas-burning systems place greenhouse gases (GHG) into the air, which are a major contributor to the growing issue of climate change. The conventional refrigerant used in most electric heat pump water heaters is a hydrofluorocarbon chemical blend like R410A. But many commercial and industrial systems have switched to using natural refrigerants such as carbon dioxide.
The SANCO2 unit from Sanden is a climate-friendly, more-efficient, and less-costly system to operate compared to traditional electric water heaters. The SANCO2 does not even need to use an electric backup system to deal with drops in outdoor temperatures.
