AC Maintenance Is Like a Glass of Water in the Morning

ac-maintenanceThey say that the best way to start off your day is with 16 ounces of water. This helps kickstart your metabolism, flushes out toxins, helps your brain operate at its full potential, and recover the fluids you’ve lost through the night.

When it comes to air conditioning maintenance, it’s not so different. That tune-up is sort of like a big glass of water to set your AC right for the rest of the summer. Instead of being a daily occurrence, a tune-up is something you only need once a year, but it has a similar effect. Allow us to explain:

Cleans Out the System

Your kidneys need water to flush out the toxins you’ve accumulated in your body. Without enough water, your body is holding those toxins instead of getting rid of them. Likewise, your air conditioner can accumulate some “toxins” over its inactive period that a tune-up can flush out.

For example, your air conditioner will accumulate dust and dirt throughout the year. Instead of turning your air conditioner on immediately, consider how that dust might affect its performance. One of the biggest issues is the fact that the coils can become covered in dust.

The outdoor coils—the condenser coils—help release hot air from the system and into the outdoors. Too much dust and dirt can act as an insulator, holding that heat inside and causing a malfunction.

As for the indoor coil—the evaporator coil—too much dust can cause the coils to freeze over. A frozen evaporator coil will block airflow and can damage the compressor over time.

Helps Retain Original Efficiency

According to the EPA, your air conditioner can retain up to 95% of its original efficiency with regular maintenance. Without the annual tune-up, your AC loses about 5% of its original efficiency with every year.

To return to our glass of water analogy, think of it in terms of dehydration. When you’re sleeping for 7 to 8 hours, you can’t recover your fluids. Naturally, you wake up dehydrated. This leaves you feeling fatigued since your brain is about 75% water.

Likewise, your air conditioner becomes a bit “dehydrated” over half a year of no use. Recovering some of its original efficiency with maintenance is like giving it that big glass of water.

Imagine trying to perform hard work while dehydrated—especially in the middle of summer. Your AC will still work tirelessly to reach your desired temperature on the thermostat, but it won’t do it with the best efficiency. That means it will run longer than usual, use up more energy, and lead to an increased energy bill.

Running Without a Full Tank

Water is an essential fuel for our bodies. We can even last a few weeks without food as long as we’re properly hydrated. When you cut the water out completely, it’s going to get tough really quick.

Likewise, an air conditioner without that tune-up can start developing some serious problems down the line. Maintenance acts as a preventive service to ensure that it runs throughout the entire summer.
